Insight into the Scoring Scheme of the PTE Academic: Enabling Skills

As mentioned in the previous blog, your final score is an aggregate of scores received for your communicative skills and enabling skills. Enabling skills are relatively new to the PTE test of English department. These skills are used to rate the competence of a student in the productive skills of speaking and writing. The enabling skills that are taken into consideration are grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse. Only selected items in the PTE Academic India exam are scored for enabling skills, as these items stoke the enabling skills in an individual.

The enabling skills are described below:

Grammar

Correct use of language with respect to word form and word order at the sentence level

Oral fluency

Smooth, effortless and natural-paced delivery of speech

Pronunciation

Production of speech sounds in a way that is easily understandable to most regular speakers of the language. Regional or national varieties of English pronunciation are considered correct to the degree that they are easily understandable to most regular speakers of the language

Spelling

Writing of words according to the spelling rules of the language. All national variations are considered correct, but one spelling convention should be used consistently in a given PTE response

Vocabulary

Appropriate choice of words used to express meaning, as well as lexical range

Written discourse

Correct and communicatively efficient production of written language at the textual level. Written discourse skills are represented in the structure of a written text, its internal coherence, logical development and the range of linguistic resources used to express meaning precisely

If the content or form of your answer is not in accordance to the PTE Test question asked, you will receive no enabling points for that particular item. E.g. a question asking about sky diving requires an answer related to it. An answer bearing information about scuba diving will receive no points for communicative or enabling skills. Bear in mind to stick to the solicited form also. If you are required to answer in one sentence, do not write an essay. If you do so, you will not receive any points.

The PTE is an easy exam. Prepare well, concentrate on your exam and you will come out with flying colours. The PTE Academic India is the cheapest exam in the department. If you buy a PTE voucher from your nearest AECC Global office, you will receive an additional discount, bringing the total fee down to Rs. 9810. Don’t miss this chance to excel in the test of English, which costs the least in the market. It’s a win-win situation!
