PTE vs IELTS – The all-important scoring pattern:

For any English test to be comprehensive, it is essential to include the four facets of linguistic testing. In accordance, both IELTS and PTE incorporate listening, reading, writing and speaking into their tests. With these scores, it is easy to assess the overall language skill of a student, which is as important to a university as it is to a student. A university wants to ensure that a student who gains admit can contribute to a classroom, which is only possible if the student comprehends the language of instruction. A student, on the other hand, must look to gather as much knowledge from a classroom as possible. A foreign education is not cheap. Students must look to obtain full value for the money spent on this education.

The basic, most obvious, difference between the two is the scoring scale. IELTS scores the test on a scale of 1-9, whereas PTE Academic uses the 10-90 scoring system. PTE is definitely a more comprehensive testing system since the scores are generated against the global scale of English, which is offers precision to its fullest. In addition to this progression PTE Academic India is a computer based test, which ensures more accuracy and impartial assessment of scores.

Unlike IELTS, which offers a general grade, PTE Academic breaks down the scores to the minutest possible detail. The score report contains two sections: communicative skills scores and enabling skills scores. The communicative skills are common to both IELTS and PTE, i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking scores.

With PTE Academic you can also score points on enabling skills that are based on your grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse. These scores are assessed on all testing sections.

The PTE score card also includes infographics of the above sections which gives students an in-depth analysis of their performance. This acts as a guide to aid improvement in further tests, if required. The student also obtains the added benefit of receiving their recorded speech samples along with their scores. During the time of application, this recording can also be sent to universities to strengthen the student’s plea for application.
