Speaking Section of the PTE: Read aloud

For many students who aspire to study abroad, the speaking section of the PTE test of English has been an unassailable obstacle. In an effort to ease a student’s anxiety, PTE has come up with a fully computerized exam. Yes, even your speaking test will be conducted by a machine. You will be asked questions by the machine and you will have to answer into a microphone. This makes it easier for students who feel uneasy while talking to a personal examiner, as in IELTS.

The first subsection of your speaking test is termed “Read Aloud”. As the title suggests, you will be given a statement or two and asked to read what you see on screen. It is very straight forward and should not cause you much trouble. The following PTE Academic tips will help improve your score in this section:

Use the text displayed to its fullest: it is essential to notice punctuations. This will help you break down a sentence into more comprehendible pieces. Not only will it help you understand the text better, but it will improve your speech, pronunciation and, hence, your scoring. Remember that you are talking to a machine. Enunciation in PTE is very important!

Identify and stress on words that are significant, to add meaning to a sentence: in all sentences there are certain words that make a sentence more meaningful. E.g. The Earth revolves around the Sun. In this statement revolves holds top significance. The Earth and the Sun are also important, but they take the back seat because revolves is more important. In this manner identification of key words will make your speech more intelligible and hence give you a better PTE Academic India score. Do not worry about rushing through the sentences as soon as you see them. You will be given 30-40 seconds to glance through the text before your microphone opens for recording.

This type of testing is definitely easier than IELTS, wherein, you will be asked an impromptu question and required to come up with a smart answer in front of a personal examiner.
